Sun, Moon, and Stars - Week 5

Cheri did her lesson at the park this time. The kids always love that. She gave them a lesson on the birth and life of a star. The kids held a black plastic sheet to represent space. The two sparkle balls represent 2 hydrogen attracted to each other to create a star.

Then Miss Cheri showed them some pictures of star nurseries, a nebula.

We learned a little about gravity. The kids tried to guess which ball had more gravity.

Then, of course, we had to try tossing our big ball. The kids did this a few times. It was too fun not to.
We talked about photons and how light particles travel. So we then had a relay race with the big ball as a traveling photon.
Here's where the kids got to create their own star nursery...

Sun, Moon, and Stars - Week 4

To go along with our sun, moon, and stars theme, Theresa did a lesson on astronauts. First, she taught the kids a few facts about rockets and astronauts.
Then we gave her a countdown for the take off of a rocket. Make sure those rocket boosters come off! She told them about all the stages the rockets go through to get to the moon.

Then we had our astronaut training. The kids had to pick up the playdough with a robot arm and open and close a latch with astronaut gloves on.

Time to shoot off a rocket. All the kids had a blast with this project. I think they would have done it all day if we would let them. Even the little ones got a turn.

Sun, Moon, and Stars - Week 3

Brandy taught the kids all about the moon and sun this week. She started out showing them how the sun shines on our earth, giving us light and energy.
Then she pulled out her fun science pop-up books and showed the kids the planets and talked about the moon, too.
We talked about the surface of the moon and how craters and man's footprints are never blown away - well, unless Julie takes her big broom up there and sweeps them away.
Time for a song...

Then, everyone squeezed into the bathroom where it is dark, and we made our own eclipse.

No one complained about this craft: moon stages with oreos.
Zane was sure to copy all the moon stages correctly in his moon book.

Snack time. Our snacks looked a bit like our solar system. Careful, that orange might be hot. ;)

Sun, Moon, and Stars - Week 1

It's a new day of Creation and a new unit: Sun, Moon, and Stars.
Jenny started us off by teaching the kids a few facts about the planets.
Caedon read about this day in Creation from Genesis.
Then we all worked on making books or mobiles about the planets.
The kids cut, colored, and glued their planets to construction paper. This took a lot more time than we expected. We had to take some of the work home. We did finish our mobile, but I never got a picture of it. Some of the kids chose to make books out of theirs.

We LOVE to Party

The end of our land unit happen to fall on Valentine's Day, so we decided to use that day for a Valentine's Party.
Cheri brought a book about sharing to read to the kids.
Then we used stickers, glue, and lots of glittery things to made Valentine's Day bags to store our cards.
We had a game where you load a straw with a q-tip and try to blow it out into a bowl.
Then we lined up the bags and everyone passed out their cards.

We decided to make this party a little special and do lunch together. Everyone made their own heart pizza to enjoy.

There was a lot of pink that day!

Land - Week 4

Cheri took us outside to a park for this week's lesson. It was a bit chilly and a bit windy, but nice to be out in the sun. She talked to the kids about different types of land formations and had them make the shapes with their hands and bodies. They learned about mountains, plateaus, islands, peninsulas, caves, and more.

We tried to get Jack to get in the cave, but he wouldn't do it. Caedon volunteered.

The kids broke up into teams and were sent on an assignment: run out to the other side of the field, find a picture of a specific land form, and bring back a tile from the bucket next to it. Cheri likes to make the run. YEAH!!

After a couple of laps of doing that, each team were given a color of tile to take back to the buckets, and were then to retrieve the bucket and card. Lots of exercise today. Cheri then discussed each picture with the kids to make sure they knew which was which.
